In most cases, a movie is intended to entertain rather than to convey the truth. There are a lot of misleading ideologies presented to the world in the hope of making a movie entertaining. Sadly, many interpret them as truth. Here are a few ideologies that I had to unlearn and would like to explore further
- Flawed acting
- Bad ideologies
- Faulty history
- Argumentation
Flawed acting – Growing up, I watched too many movies. Besides school and friends, movies where my my only contact with the outside world. I tried to grasp the world’s complexities through the movies I watched. Unfortunately, I could not have chosen a worse source of information. In an effort to understand what I saw. I began to analyze everything. I examined people’s body movements and how they responded to certain situations. I used these lessons to understand people’s behavior. My self taught education exposed me to a great deal of faulty lessons. I consequently encountered a lot of problems trying to understand how people react naturally to different situations.
Bad ideologies – If a movie isn’t interesting, people simply won’t watch it. There are some minor changes that need to be made to make the plot work and make the movie interesting. The genre Sci-fi has one big ideology that is prevalent in a lot of stories: that most of humanity is useless. As a result, the main character is able to save the world. There are too many people who apply that portrayed stupidity to reality and build up a real sense of pessimism toward humanity.
Faulty history – History is extremely difficult to recreate in a movie. There are just too many moving parts to account for, and sometimes it’s just too expensive to recreate reality. Due to this, there are numerous small cracks that appear, which result in a wrong representation of history.
Argumentation – Arguments in movies don’t always end well. There is a lot of yelling going on between people. A disastrous argument can lead to the death of a person. So I avoided arguments in real life, and if I got into one, I felt really sad. In reality arguments are very helpful. Most of the time, it teaches you stuff you didn’t know, and it helps you to see the world from a different perspective.
In retrospect, I may have simply been blind as a child, failing to grasp these obvious truths. However, I wanted to bring awareness to these issues. To ensure that others don’t make the same mistakes I did. Finally, I would like to share a quote that I always remember when I walk into someone’s home. “Never trust anyone whose TV is bigger than their bookshelf”
