No one can be a man unless his father has died

“Noone could be a man unless his father has died.” -Freud

According to Freud, a man cannot accept full responsibility for his own actions until after the death of his own father, as only then does the person realize there is no one to turn to for answers but himself.

“Yes, but that death could occur symbolically. ” -Jung

Jung argued that there is no need for a physical death, as a man could simply “strip away” the father-image. For that the son will need to view his father as just another man.

Men often follow their fathers’ judgments in life, thereby avoiding full responsibility for their actions. Nevertheless, developing into a man requires the son to accept full responsibility for his actions. In the beginning, it may seem scary, since it is something new. But taking responsibility for your own life will lead to wisdom and a great deal of self-respect.
